Jokes and their function

What are jokes?
Jokes are a pleasant realization that something about a story is odd.
When pictures of impossible or awkward scenes show up in your mind's eye, a smile or a laugh starts.

People tell jokes to check if the people they are addressing are able to spot the odd thing about a situation or a story. If you can spot it, it means that you have a solid basic understanding of how that particular situation should work normally and you thereby demonstrate that you are intelligent and fit.

Jokes are extremely important in human culture. We crave laughing and try to do everything to be funny. This urge comes from the need to demonstrate that we have a good feel for what is right and what is wrong.
Another function of a joke is to state one's views:
If you tell a racist joke, you are still just telling a joke, you are not 'actually' being racist, but by gaugeing the reaction of your audience, you can scan their attitudes towars racial exclusion.
In every joke there is some truth. By telling the joke, you are not only getting the information about your listener's sharpness but also stating a claim.

Jokes are humans' best way to scan other human's brains.
It is extremely pleasurable when people get our jokes, meaning that they have similar thought patterns.
We will prefer to stay with those people who laugh with us, so ultimately  jokes allow us to cluster up and form alliances.
